'The Gay Galtee Mountains (White, Orange and Green)' (Writer Unknown) Performed by The Wolfe Tones On the gay Galtee Mountains one morning in May I'll tell you a story that happened one day It's about a fair maiden her age was sixteen And she sported the colours white, orange and green. A young British soldier was passing that day And he spied a fair maiden with colours so gay He rode alongside...

'The Green Glens of Antrim' (Kenneth North) Performed by Paddy Reilly Far across yonder blue lies a true fairy land With the sea rippling over the shingle and sand Where the gay honeysuckle is luring the bee And the green glens of Antrim are calling to me Sure if only you knew how the lamp of the moon Turns a blue Irish bay to a silver lagoon You'd imagine the picture of heaven it would be Wher...
The Water Is Wide

'The Water Is Wide' Performed by Maura O'Connell The water is wide and I can't cross o'er, And neither have I wings to fly, Give me a boat that can carry two, And both shall row, my love and I. For love is gentle and love is kind, And love is sweet when first it's new, But love grows old and waxes cold, And fades away like mornin' dew. There is a ship and it sails the sea, She's loaded deep as ...

Written by Tommy Fleming, Sang by Cara Dillon My song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine Now Isaac he was Protestant and Sean was Catholic born But it never made a difference, for the friend...

I wish I was in Carrickfergus Only for nights in Ballygrand I would swim over the deepest ocean Only for nights in Ballygrand But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over And neither have I the wings to fly I wish I could find me a handsome boatman To ferry me over my love and I For it's in Kilkenny it is reported On marble stone there as black as ink With gold and silver I would support her But ...

Miss Éire (I am Ireland) is a 1912 Irish-language poem by Pádraig Pearse. In the poem, Pearse personifies Ireland as an old woman whose glory is past and who has been sold by her children. The title of the poem was used as a title for a 1959 documentary film by George Morrison, which dealt with key figures and events in Irish Nationalism between the 1890s and the 1910s, including Pearse himself...

'Twas Kerry here, 'Twas Kerry There 'Twas Kerry, Kerry everywhere And all along the midnight air We’d hear the war cry Kerry Our hand grenades were Kerry made Our men were of the Kerry grade And when the north it was betrayed We placed our hope on Kerry The Tans they came into Tralee To conquer with their tyranny But Lynch’s army made them flee From Our beloved Kerry Was Kerry right? Was Kerry ...

62 now, lived through it all in Belfast, Army took over half our school and used us as human sheilds in the early 70s, many riots, many night raids on our home, rubber and live bullets flying by and over head, beatings in the dark of night by cowards in khaki uniforms, bigoted RUC/B specials murdering us at will, but yet we will prevail, the struggle continues in a different form, we will never be a conquered people and the Republic will be all of our Island soon, we will never give up our birthright, we will never give in to tyranny, we have our ancesters and we have a future, FREE.

Crazy to think that the man who wrote that poem was executed in Ireland by order of an English General. Rest in peace Pádraic Pearse. Your father was English but you were more of an Irishman than most Irish with two Irish parents.

The message is clear. Pearse was doomed. He composed the poem, and told Eire to last long. Lady Eire is ancient, and indeed outlive the decades of The Troubles. He said ERIN GO BRACH!!

And done in the style of an Irish or Scottish lament. Up until the mid/late 60s, there was "Country" music, and there was "Western" music. Country came from primarily the southeastern US, which had been settled largely by people coming over from the British Isles. They brought their music with them, and the legacy is songs like this.

This really underwhelms. Every time I listen to this (which admittedly isn’t often), I keep waiting for the band to take off into something really expressive. But nothing ever happens. I’m not a fan of Mick Jagger, at all, but when people sing with the Chieftains I guess I expect a lot more.
